A small pump called a metering pump is used to inject a small amount of soda ash (sodium carbonate) into the water, usually in combination with a contact tank. For best results, allow a few minutes of contact with the water for pH adjustment to occur and the soda ash solution to thoroughly mix in the water by using a contact tank. For home wells the metering pumps are usually wired to turn on and start pumping soda ash solution when the well pump is energized or running.
Soda ash is bought dry, 50 lb bags and mixed with water in the solution tank. When a saturated solution is achieved a solution is injected, depending on the pH, alkalinity and flow rate of the water. For pH between 5.5 and 6.0 you will mix 4 oz of soda ash to 1 gallon of water. If your pH is between 4.5 and 5.5 you will mix 6 oz of soda ash to 1 gallon of water.
FAQs
Q: How often must I fill the solution tank?
A: Depending on the adjustment of your pH thats needed and the amount of water you use, you will top off the solution tank every 3-6 months with additional soda ash and water mixture.
Q: How long will the 50lb bucket of soda ash last me that comes with my system?
A: On average a 50lb bucket will last 1-2 years depending on water usage and pH level. Once it comes time to order more, another 50lbs bucket is only $150.
